Lk 4:14–30
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18       “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
      because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19       to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘ “Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Welcome back to the Iron Saints podcast with your host, Dan Willis. Welcome back Saints, great to have you. I hope you guys are having an amazing day. Thank you so much, all of you guys who have been listening. It has been an absolute blast. We're going to get right back down to it here though, breaking down the book of Luke. Make sure that if you guys are enjoying the podcast, it could take a few minutes just to leave a review. Wherever you are, share it with anybody that might be benefiting from a devotional daily. But without further ado, let's just get right down to it as we continue our study of Luke. So yesterday, guys, we did break down Christ's temptation by Satan. So that was a bit of a blast to go through that. I know it's a well known passage that a lot of people love. We're going to keep moving here though today and take a look at what comes next for Jesus on his walk as his ministry has officially started. He threw down, he had his first bout with Satan and now we are going into his ministry and his walk. As always guys, I will be reading from the ESV. We will be starting luke, chapter four, verse 14. So for those of you that want to read along, that's where we're going to get going. As always guys, if you're listening on the road, at the office, wherever you can't get your Bible, don't worry, I am going to read the passage out and let's take it from there. So Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to gallery in a report about Him, went out through all the surrounding country and he taught in their synagogues. Being glorified by all, he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day and he stood up to read the scroll of the prophet. Isaiah was given to him and he unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. He began to say to them today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, is this not Joseph's son? And he said to them, doubtless you will quote to me this proverb physician, heal yourself. What we've heard you did at Purnim Do here in your hometown as well. And he said, Truly, I say to you, no profit is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the heavens were shut up three years and six months and a great famine came over the land. Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zerafa in the land of siding to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel at the time, and the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only name in the Syrian. When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built so they could throw him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, he went away. How's that first start? So he's preaching in the synagogues. People are applauding and people are loving what they're hearing. He goes back to his hometown, Nazareth. Is there. Everybody's gathered. He's in the synagogue, he's preaching even after he reads the Lord scripture, everybody there loves what he has to say. But then he goes on to clarify, you guys are asking, you guys have a heart's desire. Show me the miracles. You didn't compare Him, the things that you did there. Come here, show us. And he goes, you know, in Scripture, in the Old Testament, we see over and over and over again the Jews rejecting the prophets irregardless of the miracles that they performed. And the miracles that they performed were instead performed not for the nation of Israel, but for those outside the nation of Israel so that they would come to know who God is. And he's explaining and he's telling them, the reason why I'm doing these things, the reason why I'm performing these miracles for the Gentiles is because they have no understanding of the Scriptures. But you guys, you have an understanding of the Scriptures. You have the ability to read the word of God. You should know who I am, what I'm about, what I'm doing. You shouldn't require prophecy from me. You shouldn't require miracles from me. All that you should require is that the Word has called you to serve as a member of the body of Christ. That's what you need to know and reconcile for those of us hearing this that are Christians, you saints out there, you men of God that are hearing this, take us to heart. Take us to heart in a big, deep way. You shouldn't be sitting around waiting for a miracle of the Lord to shower down upon you. You've got the Word, you've got the Scripture. God's breathe word infallible. Sitting there for you to have that gives you testimony to who Christ is, who he wants to be in your life, that's there for you. Sharpen yourself in that. If you're a Gentile, if you're somebody who is outside of the faith of Christ and you're hearing this for the first time though, challenge the Lord. Ask Him to show you something. Ask Him to hear something that promises here as well in many ways, and I'm not saying God is going to immediately shower it down. You can go back and listen to past episodes where God will do the things that are after us, but often not in the way that we think. But if you're somebody who is not a believer hearing this, please take the time, throw up a prayer to the Lord, ask Him for something crazy. But for those of us who are in the faith, those of us who know the Lord, we have the Word, and we should be going to it daily. So huge thank you to all you guys that are doing that daily here with me. For those of you that do your own personal devotions, your family, teaching above and beyond on top of listening to this podcast, power to you guys. But the key takeaway from this passage for me is Christ comes to those who know and should know who he is and has the expectation that that is enough. Is christ enough. Answer that question today. I challenge you. All right, guys, let's close this up in prayer here. As always, guys, if you do a prayer request that you would like me to pray for here on the stream, all the social media links are down below. My email is down below. Feel free to send me an email or reach out to me on social media with any prayer requests that you would like lifted up here. Those are always done under pseudonym or first name only, so there will be some level of confidentiality there for you. But without further ado, let's get down to it. Lord, thank you so much for all the blessings that You've shown us. Thank you for the hardships that You've given us. Thank you that we can know you without miracle or prophecy, that we have Your Word, an infallible word, to show us Christ. Show us the gospel, to show us Your desire for our lives. Thank you so much for that. Lord, I continue to lift up Tom and his wife to you as she continues her recovery. Thank you so much for that. I pray for those that are currently facing battles with cancer. Lord, there are several folks that have thrown their names in that they are currently struggling through and with cancer, those battles can be extremely difficult, whether it's themselves or their family members. I just pray that Your healing hand is in that place. I pray that you continue to hear their passion, hear their word. Lord, I would lift up Ryan to you. He's a new believer. He's a young man who's struggling with cancer. I just pray that you're with him and his family as they continue to face that ongoing illness. Lord, I lift up Reverend Andy to you. His congregation is starting the Alpha course. It's a passion to reach out to those who are unchurched and share the basics of the Gospel show, the basics of scripture. They were hoping for 50 people. Lord, I do hope that you bring them about you, that there's a field of plenty and they are workers looking to work it. I pray that you would do great things for the Lord. Just pray for all the men that are listening to this, Lord, that you would continue to sharpen them, sharpen their swords. Pray that they would reach out to the men in this community and their communities and sharpen themselves as they headed into the world to spread the good news in Your name, we pray. That's it for today, man. Have an amazing day. Again, thank you to all of you who have taken the time to share this out as well as leave reviews. I can't wait to see tomorrow as we continue in the Book of Luke. Thank you for listening to the Iron Saints podcast. If you are looking to share your prayer requests, check the description for social media or email to contact the show. Blessings on you all. Until next time.
